The Lollies 2024 [AD]

A vibrant display of four children's books resting on a soft carpet, perfect for sparking imagination and adventure.

Have you heard of The Lollies?

The Laugh Out Loud Book Awards were introduced in 2016 by Scholastic and celebrate the best and funniest children’s books – as voted for, by children. There are a variety of categories to vote in: picture books, age 6-8, age 9-12, teen, nonfiction, poetry and illustrator of the year and each category had four nominations to choose between.

The lovely team at Scholastic kindly sent us the nominations in both the age 6-8 and poetry categories to read and enjoy at home before casting our votes – and I just had to share them with you.

Poetry

  • This is Not a Dinosaur – written by Barry Timms, illustrated by Ged Adamson and published by Nosy Crow

Is it a dinosaur or a shineosaur, or a sleeposaur, or a glideosaur? One thing’s for sure, a dinosaur would make a very good friend – as they can be anything! We enjoyed all the tongue twisters and adventures in this book – it definitely got us using our imagination and it made us smile.

  • The Blue Footed Booby – written and illustrated by Rob Biddulph, published by Harper Collins

When Desmond the red footed booby’s homemade frangipane tart goes missing, he has to follow the footprints to solve the mystery – but all is not what it seems. We loved the vivid illustrations in this book, as well as the rhyming words and the intrigue of the plot. We can read it again and again, and it’s always exciting.

  • The Gecko and the Echo – written by Rachel Bright, illustrated by Jim Field, published by Orchard Books

Goldy the Gecko loves the limelight and dreams of being a big star. Unfortunately, everyone else on the tropical island finds him annoying and overbearing and so he goes on a journey which leads to a self-discovery. It’s such a beautifully written story with stunning illustrations – with important life lessons included. We love the ending!

  • Over to You – written and illustrated by Roger McGough, published by Puffin

From questions such as Who was the Girl? and Anybody There? to writing a first, second and third poem (or haiku) and going on an adventure with some animals that have some very imaginative dreams, Over to You is a fantastic poetry book you can dip in and out of, with fun and surprises on every page. Our favourites to read together are Alphabet Soup and More Alphabet Soup, Anyone?

A cozy carpet with four colorful children's books spread out, inviting young readers to dive into their stories.

Aged 6-8

Alfie hasn’t got around to reading all of the 6-8 category nominations yet, but the four books we received are:

  • Bad Panda: The Cake Escape – written by Swapna Haddow, illustrated by Sheena Dempsey, published by Faber & Faber
  • Bunny vs Monkey: Machine Mayhem! – written and illustrated by Jamie Smart, published by David Fickling Books
  • Grimwood: Let the Fur Fly! – written and illustrated by Nadia Shireen, published by Simon & Schuster
  • The Worst Class in the World Goes Wild! – written by Joanna Nadin, illustrated by Rikin Parekh, published by Bloomsbury

There’s not long left to cast your votes, so visit the Scholastic website for more information. The winners will be announced at the end of year.

A massive thank you to the team at Scholastic for sending us the two shortlists for reading – we’ve loved them all… and it certainly makes voting tricky!

Love, Lucy xx

*The team at Scholastic sent us the eight books for review, FOC. But images and opinions are 100% my own.
