Post-Zoo Dinner at York & Albany, London

York & Albany, Camden, London, Regents Park, Gordon Ramsay, Restaurant, Review, Food Blogger,
With our experience at the zoo starting at 4:45pm (and no idea how long we’d be) and a train back from Euston booked for 7:29pm, we didn’t have much time in between to eat. I found York & Albany on Book a Table, on our way into London and immediately booked for 6pm – thankfully, on arrival we were shown straight to our table.

What I also failed to realise was that it was one of Gordon Ramsay’s restaurants and it was rather fancy inside... I was under the impression it was a pub! In fact, it’s also a Townhouse Hotel. But it was lovely, with a large bar and dining area. We requested a highchair in the booking, but had to ask for a children’s menu. I have to say the children’s menu is excellent – with a child under 12 eating free with every adult (main courses are £7.50 otherwise) – and it came in the form of a box, with colouring in to do, stickers and three crayons. Tilly’s Treats they call it.

We chose the sausage & mash for Alfie, but were given the option to swap the mash for fries, which we did – and Alfie loved it! It came in a wide-lipped bowl, so he was able to feed himself (after I’d cut the sausage up). He left the peas (shock!) but had a good go at the rest of it. I was pleased with the portion size (too much for Alfie, but perfect for older children) and quality of the food.

I was torn between the crispy duck salad and steak – but when I found out the 8oz bavette steak was unavailable, I panicked and chose the 10oz sirloin instead. A bit of a mistake. It came with peppercorn sauce (I don’t actually remember ordering this and we were charged), fries (again, a surcharge for sides) and a dressed rocket salad. I was planning on sharing fries with Alfie, so there was a bit of confusion there – but as we were pressed for time, I was happy to go with whatever! The steak was cooked perfectly, medium rare as requested and I enjoyed it, largely because we don’t have steak at home often. But I can’t help but think I’d have enjoyed the salad more.

Ash had the short rib beef burger with Monterey Jack cheese, caramelised onions and bacon, with fries. The burger is usually served with triple-cooked chips but in all the confusion, he received fries, which he was pleased about. However, he described it as an average burger.

With having to get the train, we didn’t have time (and in my case, room) for dessert and instead, got the bill immediately. Our waiter was good and understood our urgency – although there was another family who arrived after us and left before us, it’s not really an in-and-out kinda place! The experience did suffer as a result, as I’m definitely into leisurely and more relaxed dining. We were both in agreement we wouldn’t return to eat... but the cocktail menu was very tempting, especially the festive offerings.
